Tiger Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) is Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, perched dramatically on a cliff 3,120 meters above sea level in Paro Valley. A scenic hike through pine forests leads to this sacred Buddhist monastery, offering breathtaking mountain views and a truly unforgettable spiritual experience.
Paro Taktsang, popularly known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is Bhutan’s most famous and sacred Buddhist monastery. It is perched on a steep cliff about 3,120 meters (10,240 feet) above sea level in the Paro Valley. According to Bhutanese legend, Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew to this cliff on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in a cave for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours. This is why the monastery is called “Tiger’s Nest.” The monastery complex was built in 1692 around the sacred meditation cave and has become one of Bhutan’s most important pilgrimage sites. Despite suffering damage from a fire in 1998, it was carefully restored and remains a symbol of Bhutan’s rich spiritual heritage and culture. Today, Tiger’s Nest attracts pilgrims and travelers from around the world for its breathtaking views, peaceful atmosphere, and deep religious significance.
